Sequelae of congenital heart diseases in the adult

Upto 85% of infants born with congenital heart disease can survive to adult life, mostly due to advances in therapy and corrective procedures. A significant group of them have various residuae of congenital malformations and complications These include electrophysiological disturbances like arrhythmias related to scars of surgery as well as due to myocardial dysfunction, valvular disease  persistent intracardiac and extracardiac shunts, myocardial dysfunction, pulmonary or systemic vascular disease, issues caused by prosthetic materials including infectious complications, thromboembolic events and extravascular disorders of multiple organs or systems like coagulation abnormalities, polycythemia and hyperuricemia related problems.
