Advantages of AV Synchrony

Advantages of AV synchrony (atrioventricular synchrony)

Atrial systole which is appropriately timed with respect to ventricular diastole helps in keeping the mean atrial pressure low and facilitate venous return. By increasing the preload or ventricular filling, cardiac output is enhanced. Atrial systole also coordinates AV valve closure and helps in minimizing diastolic mitral regurgitation. All these in turn reduces pulmonary capillary wedge pressure.
