Dilated left atrium and ventricle due to mitral regurgitation

Dilated left atrium and ventricle

Dilated left atrium and ventricle

Dilated left atrium and ventricle due to mitral regurgitation. Left atrial diameter more than twice that of the aorta (see annotated picture below). Usuallly the left atrial aortic diameters are similar in this view. The aortic valve is in closed position and mitral valve in fully open position, indicating that it is a diastolic frame.

Dilated left atrium and ventricle annotated

RV: right ventricle; LV: left ventricle; IVS: interventricular septum; Ao: aorta; AoV: aortic valve; LA: left atrium; PML: posterior mitral leaflet; AML: anterior mitral leaflet; Desc Ao: descending aorta. The mitral valve is widely open and aortic valve is closed.

Flail anterior mitral leaflet and open aortic valve

Flail anterior mitral leaflet and open aortic valve

Flail anterior mitral leaflet with its tip folding back into the left atrium and pointing superiorly. Colour Doppler flow mapping showed severe mitral regurgitation with an eccentric jet. The aortic leaflets are widely open (AoV Open) and the mitral valve is in closed position, indicating a systolic frame.
